The Pilates method is an exercise method which works on core stability, flexibility and balance. Core stability refers to the muscles around the waist area of the body which need to be strong and flexible in order to protect the spine and allow the bigger stronger muscles of the body to move more freely.

It was founded by Joseph Pilates (1880 - 1967) whose philosophy was to focus on training the mind and the body to work together to reach overall fitness. He studied several different exercise methods including yoga, Tai Chi and Chinese acrobatics and developed his method which he named Contrology. He laid down six principles: centring, concentration, control, precision, breathing and fluidity.
At Studio 23 instructors have trained under the Pilates Institute and integrate all of these principles into our classes. We focus on the quality of the exercise, and not the quantity. The exercises are performed on a mat (yoga type mat) and there is no impact; it’s non aerobic in nature and stretches the muscles and pulls them into a longer and leaner shape. It gives a whole-body workout that challenges your body like no other exercise! Pilates is similar to yoga because of the suppleness it brings. However, where yoga moves from one static posture to the next, Pilates flows through a series of movements which are more dynamic and systematic. With Pilates we think of dynamic strength whereas with yoga we think in term of stretch and length. |
